From Local Craft to Global Impact: The #MadeInIndia Success Story

The “Made in India” initiative showcases the phenomenal success of Indian-made products globally. From bicycles to digital payments, India is taking the world by storm with its innovations and craftsmanship.

Indian bicycles have become a global sensation, with exports surging to the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands. This growth underscores India’s rising influence in international markets. According to commerce ministry data, in FY2023, Mozambique emerged as India’s top export destination for bicycles, valued at $8.84 million, increasing to $10.41 million in FY2024, marking a growth of 17.82%. The UK followed as the second-largest destination, with exports rising from $3.85 million in FY2023 to $8.85 million in FY2024, a jump of 130%. Exports to the Netherlands surged 169.38%, from $1.29 million to $3.47 million. Overall, India’s bicycle exports grew from $46.5 million in FY2023 to $54.38 million in FY2024, a growth of 16.95%.

‘Made in Bihar’ boots are now part of the Russian Army’s gear, showcasing the unexpected global reach of Indian products. This milestone reflects India’s growing influence in international defense markets and the high quality of its manufacturing capabilities. Competence Exports, a private company established in Hajipur in 2018, initially focused on manufacturing safety shoes for Russia. The company has achieved significant success, emerging as one of the largest exporters to Russia. It is now poised to expand into European markets, with plans to increase exports by 50 percent next year following shipments of 1.5 million pairs valued at Rs 100 crore last year. Besides safety shoes, Competence Exports manufactures luxury designer footwear for markets in Italy, France, Spain, and the UK.

Kashmir willow bats are in high demand as the World Cup approaches, solidifying their status as a global favorite. These bats exemplify India’s superior craftsmanship and significant impact on the international cricket scene. According to estimates, Kashmir willow bats are priced up to Rs 3,500 per piece, compared to English willow bats, whose retail prices range between $220 (Rs 16,000 approx) and $450 (Rs 33,000 approx) per bat in international markets. The surge in demand for Kashmiri cricket bats is not limited to domestic markets; export orders from countries such as England, Australia, and New Zealand have also seen a notable uptick.

Amul is taking India’s unique flavors to the world by launching its products in the US. This international expansion highlights the global appeal of Indian dairy products and Amul’s commitment to spreading the taste of India worldwide. Amul products are exported to more than 50 countries around the world. This is the first time Amul’s fresh product range will be launched outside India, targeting a market like the United States, which has a strong Indian and Asian diaspora. They have tied up with the 108-year-old Michigan Milk Producers Association in the US.

India’s UPI system has become a global phenomenon, highlighting the nation’s leadership in fintech innovation and its commitment to revolutionizing digital transactions worldwide. In Bhutan, a partnership between NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL) and the Royal Monetary Authority (RMA) enabled BHIM UPI QR-based payments starting July 13, 2021. In Oman, an MoU signed on October 4, 2022, between NPCI, NIPL, and the Central Bank of Oman (CBO) facilitated the acceptance of RuPay cards at OmanNet ATMs, POS, and e-commerce sites, as well as real-time cross-border remittances using UPI.

In Mauritius, Indian visitors can use UPI to make payments to local businesses, with local banks issuing RuPay cards through the MauCAS card network. Additionally, the integration of UPI with Nepal’s National Payments Interface, effective from February 15, 2024, allows Nepali users to make instant, low-cost fund transfers to India. The UAE saw the launch of UPI services in Abu Dhabi, while France introduced UPI payments at the iconic Eiffel Tower.

Furthermore, an agreement with Liquid Group extended QR-based UPI payments to ten Southeast Asian countries, including Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore, enhancing financial connectivity and ease of transactions across the region.

The BrahMos missiles, a joint venture between India and Russia, are now operational in the South China Sea. This development emphasizes India’s strategic defense capabilities and its significant role in enhancing global security. India delivered the first batch of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles to the Philippines on Friday. In January 2022, the Philippines concluded a $375-million deal with India for three batteries of shore-based, anti-ship variants of the BrahMos, becoming the first export customer for the joint venture missile between India and Russia.

Indian products dominated Amazon’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, highlighting their global appeal. This success story showcases the international demand for #MadeInIndia items and India’s growing presence in global e-commerce markets. Tens of thousands of Indian sellers that are part of Amazon Global Selling showcased millions of ‘Made in India’ products during Amazon’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday (BFCM) sale from November 17-27. Indian exporters have already unveiled over 50,000 new products to be featured on Amazon’s global websites across several countries.

The #MadeInIndia success story is a testament to India’s growing influence in global markets, showcasing the country’s ability to produce high-quality, innovative products that resonate worldwide.
