Saket Bahuguna of the Akhil Bhartiya Vidya Parishad, the student/youth wing of the BJP-RSS, spoke to Pradip Bhandari, the Founder of Jan Ki Baat, about his partys entering the Jawaharlal Nehru University. ABVP, Bahuguna says, has tried to establish genuine student leadership wherever it goes, be it the Delhi University or the JNU. A minority in the JNU political scenario, ABVP hopes to strike a six in the future elections, too. They, says Bahuguna, fight for genuine student issues by consolidating these issues and mobilizing resources, human as well as non-human. About the Kanhaiya Kumar controversy, that took place in the university grounds, Bahuguna claims that it has been a good lesson to Mr Kumar and he has definitely learnt a lot. When inquired about the hundreds of complains against the ABVP leaders, Bahunguna believes that if the crimes of his partys members are proven then action will be taken against them. Most of these complaints dont have a base, theyre products of rumours. Some sections of media, Bahuguna opines, misrepresent events. He also believes that destructive, knee-jerk reactions, like vandalism, are not the solution to any problem.
Jawaharlal Nehru University besides its academic atmospheres is also known to be a politically charged one. Student parties in the University have usually been inclined towards Leftism; AISA and SFI are both Leftist. The entry of ABVP in this space, is a novel phenomenon. The Student Union Elections, to be held in September, would be a test for the ABVP, and by an extension for the BJP.
Unlike the Delhi University Student Elections, the ABVP would be challenging the strongly held Left front, charting onto untested waters. Would JNU would also see the ABVP in a victorious avatar?
