Human Rights Day is internationally celebrated on 10th of December. The date commemorates the United Nations General Assemblys adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. Honouring the UN General Assemblys efforts to cater to the welfare of human beings regardless of social barriers of caste, class, race, ethnicity and physical disabilities, Jan Ki Baat has chosen to take a stand, joining the relentless struggle against institutions and practices that are founded on their disregard for human rights.
The issue of human rights remains a relevant one because, despite being part of the 21stCentury, discrimination against certain sections of society persists. Violence against women, stigmas ascribed to the physically challenged, the exclusion of the lower-castes from the public space and the socio-legal struggle of the LGBTQ Community for their recognition, are just few of the visible infringements on human rights.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights became a document that guaranteed the most primary, most fundamental rights to human beings, resulting in it being accepted as contract between a government and the citizens, across the globe, assumed to be the basis for present as well as future democracies.
