JAN KI BAAT Exclusive Ground Report from Krishnanagar: Unhappy Residents Voice Concerns Over TMC MP Mahua Moitra’s Performance

In a recent visit to Krishnanagar, the Lok Sabha constituency of TMC MP Mahua Moitra, JAN KI BAAT reporter Debarghya Banerjee conducted extensive interviews with local residents to gauge their sentiments regarding their elected representative. The findings reveal a significant degree of dissatisfaction among the constituents, raising questions about Moitra’s effectiveness as their Member of Parliament.

At the district hospital in Krishnanagar, the kin of a patient expressed concerns about Moitra’s apparent absence, stating, “She’s the chairman of the Shaktinagar Government hospital but us hardly seen here. The hospital doesn’t have syringes or saline bottles. Doctors rarely visit”

One notable concern highlighted by local residents is the deplorable condition of the hospital. A local resident said, “there are middlemen working in this hospital. When someone brings a patient, middlemen drag them inside. Patients have to pay for hand gloves. No gloves, nothing is available. Treatment isn’t given properly.”

Mahua Moitra, who has been mired in the ‘Cash For Query’ scandal, only yesterday stormed out of a Parliament Ethics Committee meeting, claiming that the Chairman of the Ethics panel asked her ‘filthy questions’. But in her constituency, the ‘Cash For Query’ scandal is the least of people’s concerns. Those who voted her to power claim she has failed to deliver substantial improvements to their city. A BJP worker stated, “The hospital has seen no development from her quota, she only got a tin roof made for it.”

Residents also raised concerns about the state of the roads in Krishnanagar. The lack of development in the region is evident, with minimal progress observed during Moitra’s term as MP. Another local resident we spoke to added, “When it comes to Krishnanagar municipality – be it its drainage system or street lights – we get to see no work from the MP.”

Women voters in the constituency expressed frustration over Mahua Moitra’s purported absence in Krishnanagar.
A young woman voter stated, “Firstly, she’s never seen in Krishnanagar. I don’t think she’s even aware of women’s safety-related issues here. She’s done nothing for women’s safety, she’s taken no note about it ever.”

Another young woman, who had previously supported Moitra, mentioned a change in sentiment, saying, “I completed my graduation in 2019, she became an MP then, back then we used to speak a lot in her favor. Be it in college or when we were in the union. We used to support her, we used to say she’ll work for us, she also made many promises. But she hasn’t delivered on any count”.

It is essential to note that Mahua Moitra has made claims of her presence in Krishnanagar during Durga Puja and her contributions to the constituency. However, the voices of local residents paint a contrasting picture, with many asserting that they have not witnessed the tangible results of her visits.

In conclusion, our ground report from Krishnanagar underscores the concerns and disappointments expressed by the residents. The abysmal state of the Shaktinagar Government Hospital, subpar road infrastructure, and perceived lack of responsiveness to women’s safety issues have left constituents questioning the effectiveness of their elected MP, Mahua Moitra. As the ‘Cash For Query’ scandal continues to cast a shadow, these concerns warrant further scrutiny and demand a more robust response from their elected representative.
