CBI has registered a new case against Senior Congress Leader & Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram’s son Karti Chidambaram. Karti Chidambaram is accused of accepting ‘bribe’ of Rs 50 Lakh for allegedly facilitating visas of 250 Chinese Nationals illegally during UPA regime for Talwandi Sabo Power Project in Punjab between 2010 & 2014. It was during this time that his father P Chidambaram was Home Minister.
CBI conducted multiple coordinated raids at Sivaganga Lok Sabha MP Karti Chidambaram and at his father P Chidambaram’s residences in Delhi & Chennai. Both P Chidambaram and Karti Chidambaram tweeted about the raids. While Karti Chidambaram sarcastically said – he’s ‘lost count’ of the raids carried out against him by Central Agencies. TALWANDI SABO POWER PLANT – CHINESE LINK
Talwandi Sabo Power Plant was in the process of establishing a 1980 MW Thermal Power plant at Mansa in Punjab. The establishment was outsourced to a Chinese Company called Shandong Electric Power Construction Corp (SEPCO). The project was running behind schedule so in order to avoid penal action for the delay, Talwandi Sabo Power Limited was allegedly trying to bring more and more Chinese professionals at the site. This needed project Visas over and above the ceiling imposed by Ministry of Home Affairs

HOW KARTI CAME INTO THE PICTURE?
Sources say, the company approached Karti Chidambaram through his close associates. They allegedly devised a back door way to defeat the purpose of Visa ceiling by granting permission to re-use 263 project Visas allotted to the Chinese company’s officials.Sources say the permission for this alleged Visa grant to Chinese professionals was approved by Home Ministry in the same month of application.
